Santa Clara legend Coach Lou Cvijanovich built one of California’s most respected athletic traditions, and at the heart of it was a philosophy he carried throughout his career. He deeply embraced John Wooden’s belief that success is far more than wins and titles—it begins with character. Coach C taught generations of Saints athletes that true excellence starts with the ability to stay poised when the moment gets tough, to compete with pride rooted in self-respect, and to measure success not solely by the scoreboard but by effort and integrity.

For him, the highest achievement was what Wooden described as peace of mind—the confidence of knowing you have prepared fully and given your absolute best. That mindset continues to shape Santa Clara athletics today, guiding the standards we hold, the way our athletes carry themselves, and the legacy of championship-level performance that defines the Saints.
