iPAD Purchase Information
Each student at Santa Clara must have access to an iPad. The price for iPads begins at $249 for refurbished models on Apples website. These prices are subject to change and our recommendations are below. There is campus wide WiFi so there is no need to purchase an iPad with 3G/4G, though you are welcome to if you like.
Digital texts will be available with prices averaging $20. The typical student will spend roughly $120 per year on digital texts. Digital Textbooks will be primarily available through the iBooks store. In a few circumstances purchases will need to be made through the school if a vendor does not have their text available on the iBooks store. This is most likely to occur in AP courses.
It is essential that all students have iPads and books with them on the first day of the school year. Our book list will be published well in advance of the beginning of the school year.

The primary difference between the iPad and iPad Mini is the screen size. An iPad mini is roughly 2 inches smaller (diagonal). The choice between one and the other simply boils down to your preferred screen size.
There is also the choice of retina or non-retina displays. A retina display has 4x the pixels and as such text and images appear sharper.
The iPad Mini with retina display and the iPad Air are the most current iPad models and include the fastest and newest processor. This should not make a difference when it comes to books, but may make a difference for non-academic applications such as games.
While the minimum requirement is a 16GB device it is STRONGLY recommended that you purchase an iPad with more storage. 16GB does cover needs for textbooks, but it is likely that there will not be enough space on the device for any additional applications or documents.

There will be many safeguards in place to prevent, to the extent possible, non-academic use of their device while in school.
